Pharmacological properties
АТС vet code QS03 – veterinary drugs used in ophthalmology and otology. QS03AA07 –Ciprofloxacin.
CIPROX is a drug with pronounced antimicrobial properties due to the action of ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. The mechanism of Ciprofloxacin action is to inhibit bacterial DNA-gyrase, thereby blocking the process of DNA replication and disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane, which leads to its death. Ciprofloxacin quickly eliminates R-plasmids, which inhibits the development of microorganism resistance to the drug.
Ciprofloxacin is effective against Gram-negative (Е. coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp.,Citrobacter spp., Serratia spp., Campylobacter spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Yersinia spp., Vibrio spp., Aeromonas spp., Haemophilus spp.,Pasteurella multocida, Pseudomonas spp., Gardnerella spp., Neisseria spp., Moraxella catarrhalis, Acinetobacter spp.) and Gram-positive microorganisms (Staphylococcus spp., including strains producing penicillinase and methicillin-resistant strains, Соrynebacteriumdiphtheriae, Listeria monocytogenes), as well as against Mycoplasma spp., Mycobacterium spp., Chlamydia spp.
When instilled into the conjunctival sac, ciprofloxacin easily penetrates all eye tissues, particularly, the epithelium of the cornea and conjunctiva. The concentration of ciprofloxacin in the blood does not exceed 2.5 ng/ml. The elimination half-life of ciprofloxacin from the anterior chamber of the eye is 2 hours. When the drug is instilled into the ear, the maximum concentration of ciprofloxacin in the blood is observed after 15-90 minutes.
Ciprofloxacin binds to plasma proteins by 16-43%. Its half-life from blood plasma is 3-5 hours. Ciprofloxacin is present in blood plasma mainly in non-ionized form and is freely distributed in body tissues and body fluids. Volume of distribution (Vd) in the body is 2-3 l/kg. The concentration of ciprofloxacin in tissues significantly exceeds the concentration in blood serum. It is metabolized in the liver.
Ciprofloxacin is excreted from the body mainly by the kidneys through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion; a small amount is excreted through the digestive tract. Within 24 hours, 15-50% of the ciprofloxacin dose is excreted unchanged in the urine, and 10-15% as metabolites. Within 5 days, approximately 20-40% of the antibiotic is excreted unchanged and as metabolites in the feces.
Indications for use
Treatment of dogs and cats with infectious and inflammatory diseases of the eyes, and eye appendages (acute and chronic conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, keratitis, ulcers and erosions of the cornea, iritis, septic iridocyclitis, blepharitis) and ears (acute and chronic otitis of various etiologies) caused by microorganisms sensitive to ciprofloxacin.
Prevention of infectious diseases after injuries or exposure of the eyes to foreign bodies and aggressive compounds.
In allergic processes in the anterior chamber of the eye in dogs and cats, complicated by a bacterial infection.
For the prevention and treatment of inflammation of the eyes and ears in dogs and cats in the preoperative and postoperative periods.
Route of administration and dosage
The drug is instilled into the conjunctival sac or ear canal, 1-2 drops 2-3 times a day, depending on the degree of damage.
The duration of treatment is usually 5-7 days. If necessary, the duration of therapy can be extended to 2 weeks.
If there is abundant purulent discharge, exudates, or scabs, it is necessary to first carry out hygienic treatment of the external auditory canal and eyes (use sterile eye swabs) with specialized cleansers then instill 1-2 drops of the drug.
