PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

ATC vet QJ01 – antibacterial veterinary drugs for systemic use. QJ01DD90 – Ceftiofur.

Ceftiofur is a 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotic. The mechanism of its bactericidal action consists in inhibiting the functional activity of the bacterial enzymes transpeptidases and carboxypeptidases, which are involved in the synthesis of the main component of the cell wall of microorganisms – peptidoglycan, which leads to a violation of the osmotic balance and the destruction of the bacterial cell.

Ceftiofur has a broad spectrum of activity, and is effective against Gram-positive bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pasteurella (Mannheimia) haemolytica, P. multocida, Haemophilus somnus, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Haemophilus parasuis, Salmonella choleraesuis, Klebsiela spp., Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Bacillus spp., Proteus spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum, Salmonella typhimurium), and Gram-negative microorganisms (Streptococcus suis, S. zooepidemicus, S. equi, S. agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae, S. bovis, Staphylococcus spp., Actinomyces pyogenes), including β-lactamase producing strains.

INDICATIONS

Cattle: treatment of animals with acute postpartum metritis, necrobacteriosis, as well as respiratory diseases caused by microorganisms susceptible to Ceftiofur.

Pigs: treatment of animals suffering from acute metritis, as well as respiratory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to Ceftiofur.

Dogs and cats: treatment of animals with diseases of the genitourinary system (endometritis) and skin (pyoderma) caused by microorganisms sensitive to Ceftiofur.
