A new product in the Ukrainian manufacturer of veterinary drugs portfolio – the company BIOTESTLAB – is Tulaxan, a generic of tulathromycin (Draxxin, Zoetis).
Developed in the 21st century, this semi-synthetic antibiotic from the macrolide group is highly effective against bacteria that most often cause respiratory diseases in cattle and pigs. In particular against Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni, Mycoplasma bovis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Haemophilus parasuis, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The antibiotic is rapidly absorbed and distributed into the lung tissue (target tissue for respiratory pathogens) and is slowly eliminated from the body, providing effective single-dose therapy.
Tulathromycin is also active against Dihchelobacter nodosus, the causative agent of infectious keratoconjunctivitis in cattle, and Moraxella bovis, the causative agent of infectious pododermatitis (foot rot) in sheep.
1 ml of Tulaxan contains 100 mg of tulathromycin. The dose is calculated based on 1 ml of the drug per 40 kg of the animal's body weight (2.5 mg of tulathromycin per 1 kg of body weight). The drug is administered subcutaneously to cattle, and intramuscularly to pigs and sheep in the neck area.
Tulaxan can be used in piglets and calves from the first days of life, in particular, for metaphylaxis. For metaphylaxis in pigs, it is recommended to administer to animals when clinical signs of the disease are expected to appear within 2-3 days.
Slaughter of cattle for meat is permitted 22 days after treatment, pigs – 13 days, and sheep – 16 days. The drug should not be used in cows whose milk is intended for human consumption.
Tulaxan is produced as a colorless (or slightly yellowish) solution for injection in 100 ml glass bottles. Registration certificate in Ukraine No. AB-09683-01-24.
