The BIOTESTLAB continues to systematically expand its pharmaceutical portfolio and announces the launch of a new antibacterial veterinary drug for systemic use — SPECTOLIN, developed to help veterinarians control complex bacterial infections in pig and poultry farming.
In modern production systems, infectious diseases are rarely isolated. Mixed infections and secondary complications are typical, particularly in enteric diseases in pigs and respiratory pathologies (CRD) in poultry. Such conditions require a more structured and scientifically based approach to therapy.
SPECTOLIN is a powder for oral use that combines two active ingredients: spectinomycin and lincomycin in a scientifically proven ratio of 2:1 (44.4% + 22.2%). This combination provides a synergistic effect, an extended spectrum of antibacterial activity and a more predictable clinical outcome in production conditions.
Targeted effect on key infections
The combination of active ingredients is aimed at controlling a wide range of bacterial pathogens that affect animal performance:
- Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, Lawsonia intracellularis, E. coli — in pigs;
- Mycoplasma gallisepticum, E. coli — in chickens (CRD).
The dual mechanism of action — inhibition of protein synthesis at the level of 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits — provides a synergistic effect and extended antibacterial coverage. In addition, spectinomycin and lincomycin complement each other in terms of the localisation of the infectious process in the body: spectinomycin acts mainly in the intestinal lumen and the systemic bloodstream, while lincomycin is characterised by better penetration into tissues, particularly the lungs and inflamed areas. Such a distribution enables effective action against both enteric and respiratory infections, as well as against mixed pathological processes with different localisations of the pathogen.
Scientifically based formula
The 2:1 ratio of spectinomycin to lincomycin corresponds to modern approaches to the combined use of these active substances in water-soluble forms.
This formula provides:
- balanced action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria;
- increased effectiveness in mixed infections;
- more stable clinical response in field conditions.
The applied ratio is consistent with approaches to the combined use of these active substances in water-soluble forms described in the European Medicines Agency (EMA) materials, confirming the feasibility of such a combination in modern veterinary practice.
Developed for modern production conditions
SPECTOLIN is adapted to the practical needs of farms:
- high solubility in water and uniform distribution in the drinking system;
- no risk of equipment clogging;
- easy integration into standard treatment protocols;
- short withdrawal period (5 days), which supports production efficiency.
SPECTOLIN is used in pigs and chickens (broilers, breeding poultry, replacement chicks; DO NOT use in laying hens, the eggs of which are intended for human consumption) with drinking water once a day.
- Pigs: 15 mg of the drug/kg body weight per day or 150 g of the drug per 1500 L of water.
- Poultry: 75 mg of the drug/kg of body weight.
The course of treatment is 5–7 days.
By effectively controlling bacterial infections, SPECTOLIN helps maintain animal health and stabilise production indicators during critical periods of growth.
“Modern livestock farming requires solutions that take into account the complexity of infectious processes. SPECTOLIN is a tool that combines scientific justification and practical effectiveness in daily veterinary practice,” emphasised Mykhailo Babkin, scientific consultant of the scientific expertise department of BIOTESTLAB.
